Abby was diagnosed with Ph+ acute lymphoblastic leukemia in 2011 at the age of 4. It is a rare and aggressive form of the disease and her parents faced a critical decision for treatment???undergo a bone marrow transplant or try a unique combination chemotherapy available because of St. Baldrick's-funded research. They took a chance and opted for the innovative chemotherapy treatment. It worked! Abby powered through 32 months of treatment, and then enjoyed 11 months of just being a kid ??? having sleepovers, playing soccer, and running as fast as her legs could carry her. Then she relapsed. The only option was a bone marrow transplant. After the procedure in January 2015, Abby was again cancer free, but she developed graft vs. host disease, a serious complication. This time, doctors didn't expect her to survive.Abby was sent home on hospice and her family began the waiting. But this courageous girl had a different plan. A plan to live life as best she could. She went back to school part time. She walked down the aisle as the flower girl in a friend's wedding. She flew to Italy with her family on a much-anticipated trip and even had her own cooking show on a local TV station.Abby has made a miraculous turnaround, defying the odds. But she still lives with the possibility of a relapse. Her mom, Patty says, "The St. Baldrick's Foundation gives me so much hope that if Abby's cancer comes back, there will be options because researchers are constantly working to find cures and help children live."Help take childhood back from cancer by supporting life-saving research.
